About Holbaai

When heading from Big Bay towards Melkbos, along the R27, Holbaai beach is the last of the six beaches within the Blaauwberg Conservation Area on Cape Town’s West Coast. The access road to the beach is opposite one of the old access roads leading to the Atlantic Beach Golf Estate, which is no longer used (Access to the Estate is now via Birkenhead Drive).

Like it’s neighbouring beaches, Holbaai Beach has a small sand parking area which is surrounded by small sand dunes. A sandy pathway between the dunes shows the way onto the beach and is clearly sign posted with warnings with regards to the Dune Rehabilitation programme that is underway.

This beach is very similar to it’s neighbouring, Haakgat Beach, comprising of soft sand, often strewn with kelp. It’s popular with the dog walkers, surfers and occasionally the Kite Boarders and Windsurfers show up too. It is recommended to only swim in shallow water here as the current can be deceiving and the small waves are stronger than they look. Personally, I find it safer to swim at Derdesteen, and if my daughter is with I’d rather go to Melkbosstrand, where there are lifesavers on duty.

At it’s furtherest point, on the Melkbos side of the beach, you will find the Melkbos Cultural Centre where you can book and enjoy culture activities. I do not handle bookings or enquiries and the best I can do is redirect you here!
