About Bokkombaai Beach

Bokkombaai or Bokkombaai beach is a small shell strewn beach located at the northern tip of Blouberg Beach between the rock outcrops that separate Blouberg from Small Bay Beach. It’s mostly frequented by families with smaller kids as it provides safe swimming in the two larger rock pools and exploring opportunities among the rocks.

The beaches name is derived from the salted dried mullet called ‘Bokkoms’, which is a West Coast seafood delicacy. Personally, I don’t like ‘Bokkoms’, as I find them way to salty and fishy, but you should try them for yourself, just don’t buy a boatload of them; it is an acquired taste.

It is advisable to visit Bokkombaai in the morning or early afternoon as the South Easter Wind tends to batter this beach in the later afternoon. Also, check the tides, as this beach is best visited when it’s low-tide, when the rock pools are more exposed and the water calmer.

While it is generally safe to let your kids wonder and explore, it is advisable to keep an eye on them and not let them wonder off to far (out-of-sight). If the tide is coming in, accidents can easily happen as the strong waves break over the rocks and cause strong back-currents as they withdraw.

Ambitious Fishermen or Anglers also make use of the rocky outcrops to cast out their lines. This beach is located within The Blaauwberg Nature Reserve (BBNR) and fishing and/or picking black mussels off the rocks can only be done with the correct permit(s) and the correct time of year.

Additional Information

There is adequate free parking at Bokkombaai beach, but like most of Cape Town’s beaches, it does get scarce during the busy summer months and holiday season. If you are up for some exploration you can walk over the rocks from Bokkombaai to Small Bay, where you can also enjoy some food/coffee/drinks at the establishments along the way. Two of the most popular venues being “On The Rocks” & “Ons Huisie” restaurants.
